Workshops and technical resources at HDK-Valand

Workshops with the right equipment are a prerequisite for you to test and develop your projects and ideas. We strive to provide a complete environment, as far as possible.

Access and availability

Depending on the workshop, you may need an introductory course, a driving license or work together with a technician. Different rules applies in different workshops. Read carefully the information below.

Most workshops at HDK-Valand in Gothenburg can be booked at booking.hdk-valand.se. Several workshops demand an introduction, which you can book with the technician in charge.

Borrow technical equipment

Techshop

The techshop at Kristinelundsgatan is used for quick checkouts of cameras, VR-head sets, projectors, audio-recorders, media players and other equipment you may need for you projects and presentations.

Equipment Checkout has advanced technical equipment for large projects in film and photography. The resources are for students in HDK-Valand's programmes in film, photography and fine art.

Teacher Education Sloyd: Hard materials

Equipment and materials
The machine shop contains most of the standard woodworking machines that can be found in a primary school. There is a straightener/planer, an adjusting saw, a pillar drill, a band saw and a disc sander.
The lathe room is equipped with 8 lathes and a variety of turning tools.
The bench workshop has a variety of cutting hand tools, saws and measuring instruments. Everything you can imagine being in a primary school craft room.

Materials: Wood materials are available for purchase in the wood workshop. There is solid wood and various types of disc material.

Access
This workshop is one of the education rooms of the teacher education students in sloyd during their subject courses. It is used both for workshops in various sloyd techniques and as the students' workplace during the subject courses (throughout the year).

In order to use the machines in the machine room, an introduction by either a technician or the teacher is required.

Booking
This workshop cannot be booked for other programmes.

Support
Support is provided by the teacher in the crafts teacher training programme according to the students' schedule or by the responsible technician.

Note
In order to be allowed to work in the workshop outside scheduled teaching hours, several students from ongoing craft courses must be in the same room/space at the same time as follows:

Requirement of at least two students at the same time when working with machines: The workshop and the machine room (these two count as one room as long as the doors are open), the lathe room.
If you work alone with tools in the workshop, you do so at your own risk. The same applies to tools and equipment in our other rooms.
Our recommendation is that you are always two students in the same room for all sloyd work.

Workshops Campus Steneby

At Campus Steneby there are workshops for metal art, furniture design and textile art.

Metal workshop

In our workshop of 13000 sq. ft. you'll find a variety of shop tools and machinery for metal working in larger scale.

Equipment and material
There are 3 power hammers in sizes of 100, 145 and 275 pounds for hot metal forging and a 166 US-Ton hydraulic C-frame press for all kind of metal forming and shaping, hot aswell as cold.

You'll also find 9 coal fired forges in different sizes and 3 mobile propane-fired forges that can easily be moved around. We run them on Biopropane, that is a process residue from biodiesel manufacturing. Our latest investment is a sturdy 22kW induction heater that can heat up a inch and a quarter iron bar to 1500 farenheit in just a few seconds. This strive to reduce our carbon footprint is also shared with the Campus management, that recently installed a 90kW solarpower system so you can forge with a good conscience.

In the machine area there are drill presses with capacity up to 2" drills, one vertical and one horizontal band saw, lathes and mills.

If you prefer to work with sheet metal we can offer a hydraulic shear, press brake, sheet rolling machines, shrink/strech tools, plasma cutter, english wheel etc.

We do also have a well-equipped welding area where we offer MIG/MAG, TIG, MMA-stick welder, gas welding and a spot welder.

In our grinding room you'll find horizontal and vertical belt grinders, sand blaster cabinet, angle grinders, rotating file and if you want to give your artpiece a certain patina you could choose from either painting it in our painting room or find a chemistry mixture that gives the expression you are seeking, we have a demo-display with tested blends, or you could try your own recipe.

We cast in sand or ceramic shell molds and melt bronze, copper, tinn, aluminum etc. in our propane kiln.

We have a 3.2 ton crane that reaches over the entire shop and a generous roof height.

Material: Our material stock consists of different steel qualitys and other metals in various dimensions: flatbars, sqarebars, anglebars, sheet, pipes, roundbars, hollow profiles etc.

You can buy material on site. A fixed material fee of SEK 2,000/semester is added for unmeasurable consumables.

Access
Driving license requirements for workshop and specific machines. Prerequisites required. Technicians make an individual assessment of prior knowledge and skills before the student receives a driving license on a specific machine.

Introductions need to be booked well in advance, contact technician in charge.

Programme students in metal art have priority in the workshop.

Booking
There are only two bookable areas in the workshop, which can be booked through the lists in the workshops. Machines and other surfaces cannot be booked.

Technician will help you with various construction solutions and technical support and instruct you through the machinery.

Specific opening hours

The unit is in meeting each Wednesday at 9 am and at 10 am on Wednesdays the unit cleans the workshops.

Safety
The level of safety is high so that you can feel safe when working with our machines. You get informed about the safety rules at the introduction course to the workshop.
Each student need to sign a document with rules of conduct before getting to use the workshop.
3-person-rule when using machines that require a driver's license.

Note
Programme students in metal art are assigned a lockable tool trolley containing a basic set of hand tools, a lockable tall cabinet, lockable sketch drawers and the option of storage on a pallet space. The student is responsible for keys/tools to be returned before completed studies.

Equipment and material
Crosscut saw, rip saw, jointer, thickness planer, band saws, dimension saw, drill presses, square chisel mortiser, horizontal slot mortiser, spindle moulders, single end tenoner, overhead router, dovetail machine, veneer saw, veneer press, drum sander, oscillating vertical sander, oscillating vertical spindle sander, long belt sander, disc sander, scroll saw, wood drying kiln, lathes, laser cutter / laser engraving machine, and various hand machines.

It is also possible to get access to a 5-axis CNC-controlled milling machine (a few kilometers away, in a separate part of the school).

Material: To order material you speak with the technician. The technician can then order material for you through the university's contracted suppliers, or elsewhere. In other cases you can order and pay privately.

Students in the department pay a material fee which covers some consumables such as certain products for surface treatment and gluing, sandpaper, saw blades, drills and shank cutters, pins, screws and nails, etc. Other goods such as wood, various board materials, round rod, veneer, hard wax oil and some fittings, they are paid either directly to the technician with the Swish app, or with a bank card on the technician's computer.

It is also possible to set up a material card where you note the material you use, how much and the cost. You add up the sum and pay, by the latest a couple of weeks before the end of the semester, using one of the payment methods mentioned above.

Access
All students may be in the workshop, but not use machines for which you do not have training. Approved machine and safety course gives you license to use the machines. Contact technician to get the course.

Those who use the necessary protective equipment and have been given an introduction for the machine and have been approved are authorized to perform specific tasks, if there are at least three persons present in the department. This applies to all machines.

If you are involved in an ongoing course and who need to use the workshop within the course, you have priority for the machines.

At each start of the semester, a machine introduction course is held for two full-time weeks for each student on the wood oriented furniture design programme. (When there are many new students at the beginning of the spring term, this means four full-time weeks introductions, divided into two groups).

In the spring term, this is followed by a course in materials and technology. Later they also get an introduction to how they use the laser cutter.

The spring semester is also held in a full-time week's machine introduction course for the first-year students at Metal Art.

Booking
The workshop cannot be booked, it can be used from 07.00 - 21.00, as long as three people are in the department at the same time.
The laser cutter can be booked when technician is present. The schedule is on the door of the room.
Four time blocks are available for a full day, except once a week when the machine is serviced. Max two time blocks can be booked per person, and can be taken over if not used within 15 minutes from the start.

The CNC machine, which stands in a separate building a few kilometers away, is booked through Samir Saba at Stenebyskolan. The access is limited.

Specific opening hours

07:00 - 21:00 every day for the machine shop (for those with machine licenses, if at least three people are present simultaneously).
07:00 - 24:00 every day for sketch and bench workshop (except during Christmas and summer breaks when the school is closed).

Safety
At the beginning of each semester, all students are informed verbally, in writing and through a tour to show the practical details.
You have to sign a contract that you have received the information concerning:

Safety review for chemicals.
Safety review in case of fire or other accident.
Safety reviews on machines.
Safety review for the work environment.

Rules of conduct

In the workshops at HDK-Valand, we prioritize work environment, safety and environmental considerations.

If the workshop rules are not observed, the technical manager, in consultation with the responsible technician, may have to revoke the student's access to the workshop in question in order to ensure a safe working environment and then decide when/if a new introduction is appropriate.

Handling of chemicals

The University of Gothenburg is environmentally certified. This means that we always strive to use the most environmentally friendly material in our workshops and premises. Solution-based chemicals must be stored and handled according to HDK-Valand's routines.

The chemicals we use at HDK-Valand must be registered and stored in locked areas. The ventilation in our workshops and special spaces complies with current regulations for the handling of these chemicals.

We aim to provide all approved solution-based chemicals that you will need during your studies. The technicians in the workshops are responsible for registration if the need for new chemicals arises.

Note! This means that you may not store or use two-component materials (glue) and different types of spray (paint, fixing and glue) at your study location, but only in designated workshops/locations. Contact a technician if you are unsure of what applies.

You will receive more information about chemical handling during the introduction to the workshops.

Error reports and complaints

To prevent accidents and unnecessary wear and tear, it is important to report technical faults as soon as problems are detected.

When something doesn't work

Insurance for international students

You are covered by an accident insurance during school hours and while travellng to and from the University. You are advised to inquire about your private insurance coverage and read the necessary information in case of illness and injury.

Be sure to check that you have an insurance that covers technical resources that you borrow during your studies.
