New storage limit for OneDrive in Microsoft 365

Published

Starting from April 1st, a storage limit of 50 GB will apply to OneDrive in Microsoft 365 for students. If you store more than 50 GB on OneDrive, you will need to delete files to continue using all the functionality in the tool.

Microsoft 365 and storage

As a student at the University of Gothenburg, you have access to various cloud services within Microsoft 365, including file storage via OneDrive.

As of April1st, there will be a storage limit of 50 GB for files stored in OneDrive. If you exceed the storage limit:

  • You will not be able to upload, edit, or synchronize new files to OneDrive.

  • The files in your OneDrive will become "read only." Your existing files will remain, but you can only read, download, or delete files.

Review your storage before April 1

A few students are currently close to or above the new storage limit. It is therefore important that you review how much storage space you are using. If you use less than 50 GB of storage, you do not need to do anything.

If you are close to or above the new limit of 50 GB, you must free up space before April 1st to continue using your OneDrive as usual. You can do this by deleting files from OneDrive.

How to get under the storage limit: Microsoft 365 about managing storage in OneDrive

Strategies for managing your storage

Delete or move files you no longer use in OneDrive, such as old or unnecessary files (like assignments from last year's courses) and large files you no longer need (like videos).

It is also good to have as a guideline to only keep study-related files on your student OneDrive. Move any personal files saved in the University's OneDrive to a private storage space.
